HP Compaq Dc5800 Business PC SFF
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I was thinking about upgrading my old DC5800 SFF with Pentium E2200 to a Core 2 Quad Q9400 + GT 1030

the problem is that the PSU is 240w with 7.5A on the 12V rail, this is the PSU specs on its sticker:

5.08V: 17A
3.33V: 15A
12V: 7.5A

Now it's weird because the PSU supports up to 90w on the 12v rail and the Core 2 Quads are rated at 95w. How did people actually successfully upgraded this machine to a Core 2 Quad + GPU? Which consumes extra 30 watts or more? Is this PSU so good that it can actually handle more than it's rated 90w?

Do you have other suggestions for me to upgrade this machine? Are there any PSUs that have this unique SFF shape and can be installed instead of this 240w PSU?

Thanks

look here first see what others did,  no better place exits for this, but SFF or a pain

SFF uses non  ATX PSU,  AND NO UPGRADE EXISTS HERE.

this PC , HP only supports max windows 7,  (per your support page) (Sure never stops me..... I do and fix causes)

The PSU does NOT drive the CPU directly the VRM  does. (on board voltage reg, modules)  (yes max watts matter)

so forget PSU upgrades that do not exits. (2 reasons see?)

so the VRM does 90watts at least. Q6600 is that. (listed this chip in HP datasheet )

what  works (beyond) is not covered in HP manuals, at all, only what was done by many.

w10 64bit fails on most early stepping CPUs's core2 DOU+- and quid, have proof , MY testing

the list of w10 64 problems

  • upgrade PSU no. (not needed nor possible) 2 reasons, end topic PSU. (sure PC mounted outside case as kids do)
  • Upgrade BIOS sure.
  • use new G0 stepping quid Core 2 only, but the oldest stepping fails hard, at install. w10
  • most mobo 12 years old fail for all above and GPU no support (see here) , lan chip dead and sound , again proof.
  • or bad luck, for sure stepping versions wrong. even mobo versions (v1) wrong. (a generic answer to all mobo)
  • my links show some Q95xx works,  for sure steppings not old.

no need to read 100 pages of forums , this covers it all. (not GPU upgrade)

Gt710 yes.  low profile  only

tell me did I make this shorter saving endless reading?

Gforce 7 series up work with w10 64bit,  series 6 back do not. proof.

the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100,  all intel GMA support is here)

what is possible is here.

how long it run with wrong CPU and not overheat any VRM who knows?, you tell us. (there is PRO ANSWER !)

personally core2 need to be RETIRED.  not upgraded,. but if for fun we will watch you that be sure.😎

BUY A HP 8300  MT.(win) with a real PSU, ! an can run any GPU on earth, no kidding.

here is your PSU

full sticker

the CPU runs of VRM on the mobo.

not from PSU directly

what fails on most these PC,  w10-64 is

  • wrong CPU steppings 12years old,
  • GPU fails , intel drops igpu support
  • SOund /audio chip  no w10 support
  • and NIC chip.

PC  sold with Q6600 new, how far up the chain you can go is a matter of luck . (BIOS may stop you first)

nothing here  limits the quad,  VRMs do, not the PSU, this powerful. I see no other PSU larger watts for sale (google it)

OP sell yours on ebay

and buy this, cheap

note  real PSU !!!!!

forget core 2, it is a lost cause

you  do know that intel and ms will drop Core2 support soon,...  after all too many parts on that 12 year old PC are now obsolete and zero w10 support, that is why, ! both MS and intel explain all this,  need help>?

the q9550s  (note the "S" at the end) is the best one to use in your dc5800 the "S" suffix denotes a low power model 65 watts

your not reading the power draw requirements right, the dc850 is able to support 95 watt cpu's without issues using the SFF 230 watt supply

he fastest possible CPU to be installed on this PC is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

the dc5800 motherboard uses a std 24pin ATX style pinout as such the microtower model can use a upgraded ATX power supply, the SFF due to it's unique shape,....most likely not however if you willing to remove the HD brackets in this area it might (and i say might) be able to mod/hack in micro atx power supply ( however the cost of a new supply in this form factor makes this a  non viable project due to the cost in my opinion

personally i would highly recommend a newer model computer a z400 (v2 motherboard) or a z420 can be found on ebay quite cheap

Thank you guys. I didn't know about MS dropping support for Windows 10 with Core 2. Are you sure? I just installed Win10 64bit on a Pentium E5400.

Second thing, I read the PSU label wrong. It has two 12v rails: One for the CPU which supports 11.5A and the second 12V that supports 7.5A (for the GPU). Combining everything including RAM/SSD should not exceed the 240W, so I'm within tolerance.

The question now is. Should I buy a 14$ Q9450 (non-S) and a GT710 Gddr5 for 30$ for a total of 45$ to support a 1080p TV?

I do it mostly for fun. I already have a laptop and a desktop.

I saw that I installed Windows 10 on a CPU that was not supposed to support it: (Pentium E5400 - Wolfdale)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006105/processors.html

So maybe they do support Windows 10 up to build 1809?

Now assuming I do not want to change the PC and buy new one (I do this for fun and don't want to mess with buying machines now). Do you think that adding a C2Q Q9450 and a GT 710 will work and bring this old thing back to life (albeit temporary if Win 10 support really ends soon - How soon?)

Thanks!

windows 10 makes use of some cpu instructions that are not in earlier core 2 cpu's and some core 2 duo cpu's

however all 9xxx quad core cpu's (yorkfield) were windows 10 compatible on the earlier builds, it may be that ms is now checking for more cpu models in the newest release of windows 10 than previous releases did which makes sense since the orig win 10 release was approx 5 years ago

you might be able to install v1909 or the previous release and then do a update to the latest one

one last thing the dc5800 case(s) use stamped cutouts for the rear I/O (no backplate), however you can swap out the 5800 board for the amd based 5850 motherboard (MS-7500 motherboard) as their rear I/O is almost exactly the same using this motherboard with a AMD quad core cpu is windows 10 compatible ram/pwr supplies are compatible however this swap is only worthwhile if the motherboard can be sourced for 20.00 or less in my opinion

Thanks guys. Yep this motherboard I/O is different. But I don't want to get a new one it's just a machine that would sit there unnoticed.. I think I'll get with the Q9450/Q9400 and that's it.. 10$ upgrade no headache and also find some cheap low profile GPU and plug to the TV.

I actually enjoy reviving this machine more than the actual usage of it haha. With a cheap 240gb ssd it already runs quite fast
