Hello, I have an HP XW6400 workstation and I decided to replace the processor from two Xeon 5160 with two Xeon E5345, the problem is that the computer turns on but the system does not (I have XP, Vista, 7), even the installer from the disc or the system from another disk, namely BSOD pops up (most often Machine Check Exception) and after rebooting sometimes the FSB error 927 appears, the bios has been updated to the latest version 2.38. I do not know what to do with it because this computer should work on this processor, especially since it is in the manual, in auctions or on YouTube videos and it works.

the xw6400 was designed to use the "Woodcrest" 51xx series of cpu's not the "Clovertown" 53xx series if that's what it originally came with
to use the e5345 you must have the latest bios installed as earlier releases do not have the necessary microcode for this cpu
HP did send out a notice that installing dual quad core cpu's was not guaranteed to work in some cases you can try a lower spec cpu(s) and see if it boots

The newer QuickSpecs (http://cdn.cnetcontent.com/4e/c6/4ec62335-35ee-4779-8775-1e9a922c69ba.pdf) includes the list of Quad Core processors along with the E5345, the BIOS is also updated to the latest version as I wrote.

the xw6400 and 8400 were a bit unique in that HP did not warranty upgrading cpu's (or even adding a sec cpu in some cases)
hp's policy for these systems was warranty only for adding sec cpu (same as existing) if certain conditions were met
they also stated that some motherboards were unable to run quad core cpu's, but they never stated why as far as i know
and as i previously said you must have the latest released bios, (02.38 Rev. A) as earlier releases lack microcode for some cpu's (which you may have, but others reading this thread may not)
also you can use mac pro heatsinks on the xw6400/8400 if you have 120 watt cpu's, all you have to do is add the fans i used zip ties and plastic washers to mount the dual fans to each heatsink the pinout is a std 4 pin pwm with one extra pin
you only connect one "Tach" line from one fan (leave other fan unconnected) and connect Gnd/+12/Pwm from each fan to the proper header pin on the motherboard, last a jumper wire runs from the Gnd pin to the far end pin (pins 1-5) this tells the bios that 120 watt cooler is installed)

you can also do a FSB mod to some models of the cpu raising the stock fsb from 1066 to 1333 by shorting two lands on the edge of the cpu

i forgot to mention that a 927 error can be from the cpu, (check proper mounting) failing ram, do you have 533 or 667mhz ram? or a pci-e card that is incompatible or failing
try with one dimm, one cpu, no other cards except for vid card
