Final update:

 

XW6600's PSU is perfectly capable to power GTX 1080 FE. Unfortunately, even two E5450 are not enough to feed the beast with data fast enough. GTX 970 seems to be max. what can be reasonably used in this machine.

 

With some regret I had to decommision the XW. Probably it's going to serve the rest of it's days at my parents'.
