Hi, when I start up W10-Pro, the icons won't show up, it still looks like the log screen.
Have to open a browser or something and then they appear.
Have tried everything in BIOS, drivers and settings, nothing helps.
Two different GPU, HP, W10 and nVidia drivers, nothing.
Z440
E5-1620 v3 / E5-2650 v4
32gb DDR4 Hynix 2133 / Samsung 2133
HP Turbo Drive / SSD
First Quadro K2000, now switched to K420
W10-64 Pro updated / no updates
Very clean install
MBR / GPT
Original HP Quadro drivers / nVidia / Microsoft default drivers
Out of tricks now, any help would be very welcome.
Thanks.

hi
please perform the hardware tests
everything is explained in this link
HP PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures | HP® Customer Support
you may have an error code , failure ID (24-digit code) , as shown
if so, just give this code here and product Number P/N
--------------------------------------------------------
"because of music production I've already tried that."
I don't understand the connection between what I said and this, but if you have the same problem with a new account, whatever the drivers tested, different gpus, difficult to know what can happen
"W10-64 Pro updated / no updates
Very clean install
MBR/GPT"
here, you mean that even after reinstalling windows 10 the problem comes back?

Ok, did all tests I could find.
The problem in detail:
- On W10 boot: after the password at the login screen,
I see no icons on the desktop, but still the login screen.
- I have to open a browser or directory, or a lot of mouse movements,
after which the appearance becomes normal.
After that, all seems normal.
- Sometimes when I boot up, mostly after I changed something
it starts the right way up,
but the problem comes back after the next start up.
What I have done till now:
- All possible Bios settings done
- all latest HP drivers for Z440 W10-64
- all Windows settings plus W10 updates
- also tried nVidia drivers to no succes.
- The HP Turbo Drive will be cleaned in a Z420 in admin cmd,
and given a new GPT + new default partition before installing W10 Pro via USB-3.
There are no issues installing the OS at all,
Also third party software works with no issues.
- Have tried E5-1620 v3 and E5-2650 v4.
- Have tried a set of Hynix and a set of Samsung DDR4.
- Have tried Quadro K2000 and K420.
- Have tried E5-1620 v3 and E5-2650 v4.
- The PC and PSU is fully cleaned, screws and cables are checked.
- W10 installed in Full UEFI several times.
Hardware at this moment:
- HP Z440, Workstation in original case
- BIOS, M60 v2.59
- TPM - v1.2, will be updated later
- E5-2650 v4, 1x
- 32gb DDR4 ecc 2133, all black sockets,
4x Samsung M393A1G40DB0-CPB0Q,
213P, 1Rx4, PC4, 8GB, 752368-581
Populated PCIe's according to pdf, including HP Turbo Drive installed.
PCIe 1 - empty, disabled
PCIe 2 - Quadro K420, HP driver W10-64 v8.1.940.0
PCIe 3 - Intel Pro 1000 PT
PCIe 4 - HP Turbo Drive 256, nvme pcie3
PCIe 5 - empty, disabled
PCI 6 - ESI Juli@, original W10 driver
OS:
W10 Pro 64, 22H2
- All w10 updates
TESTS
- All HP Diagnostic tests were done in admin.
HP Support Assistent
- Network = no problems found
- OS test = no problems found
- Audio = no problems found
- No updates needed
HP Hardware Diagnostics Windows 1.8.10
- Multimedia and others that ask for internet connection = can't connect to internet - LAN cable is in the onboard port - Windows Edge has normal internet connection
- System test = all passed
- Video test = all passed, except update
- Mouse & Keyboard = all passed
- Network = no ping, irq = passed, rom = passed - [maybe my router won't let it, not sure]
- cpu = all passed
HP Docks & Displays Diagnostics Windows
- all passed
UEFI BIOS TEST
[inside bios]
- System board test : not available [?? not sure, maybe due to bios conf, nvme, other ??]
- pcie read device : passed
- memory : passed
- onboard video : not availabel [not sure if it means graphics on cpu, then it is correct, I have Quadro]
- audio : not availabel [correct onboard audio is hidden]
- usb : passed
All other tests here = passed
SSD/NVMe several checkers
- HP Turbo Drive 256 = all passed
OpenGL test
- all passed [what I understand]
Other
- VMX [VT-x] = marked red
Seems to be sitched off
I have no clue if this is important or how to switch it on.
Temperatures
- all passed very good, 39 Celsius average
What more can I do, I'm not in to clocking cpu or tweaking gpu, or gaming.
I just need a stable workstation and this annoys me.
The only thing I will do after all works fine, is tweak the OS to my audio needs.
People come and ask me to check their PC, and I just can't get my own PC right LoL.
---
My findings:
- Bios test - system board test : not available
not sure what to think about this, all other works fine.
- Internet connection in 'HP Hardware diagnostics Windows'
does not seem to me, to be a graphical problem.
- Never had this kind of trouble on my Z420, Z600 and 8200, HP laptop
these machines were all on W10, Windows 8, Window 7, XP and Linux.
My thoughts:
So my guess is, that it is a W10 and/or Z440 motherboard problem,
but I can't find any others on the www that have the same problem.
Thank you very much for your time and effort.
