I replaced the transistor, getting a $2.50 (including shipping) pack of 10.  Even after disappointment in my poor solder job, the fans have stopped their manic spinning, reported ambient temperature is now normal, and I can now return to my first task....getting my RAID 0 array in working order. Will update on that.

one last thing, order a 40mm 4 (or 3) pin 12v fan to cool the 71605's raid cards chip, this card was designed for systems (servers) that had high airflow which is borderline in the z800 there is a 4pin fan header on the z800 motherboard near the bottom of the motherboard near the rear  as i recall same as the z820's fan header

 

use either adhesive silicone or PROPER screws that securely mount in the raid cards heatsink
