Z820 Z840
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everybody, I have a question about two different workstation systems I may have access: one is a Z820 and the other is a Z840. The internal components of the two systems are as the follows:

Z820:

CPU Intel xeon E5-2687w v2 (3.4 GHz up to 4.0 GHz 16 threads)

RAM 32gb DDR3 1866 Mhz

Video NVIDIA QUADRO k4000

Power unit 1450w (220volt supply)

Z840:

CPU Intel xeon E5-2687w v2 (3.1 GHz up to 3.5 GHz 20 threads)

RAM 32 gb DDR4 2133 Mhz

Video NVIDIA QUADRO k4200

Power unit 1450w (220volt supply)

My idea is to buy a "gaming" video card like the new NVIDIA 3070 or similar to upgrade the system because the CPUs seems quite sufficient for my use and rather expensive to upgrade. The main differences between the two models are the faster CPU single thread of the Z820 while the Z840 has the possibility of DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard and cpu generation.

The price list is about the same and is not a difference between the two workstations

P. S. As a side note I'd like to ask also if there is the possibility of a dual video card system with the NVIDIA QUADRO and the NVIDIA GEFORCE 3070 or if I upgrade the system I have to discard the Quadro graphic card.

Thanks everybody for the help

a nvidia 3080 in a z820 is overkill as the fastest cpu will really not be able to take full advantage of it your 3070 is ideal for both models of workstations  if you can afford the z840 with its native bootable SSD support and faster cpu's  that's the way to go

at the present time the z820's are quite cheap compared to the z840 so cost is also a factor for most people

both systems support "SOME" quadro models in SLI HP only activated these models for SLI in a deal with nvidia as such other quadro models and all consumer card models are not supported for SLI

so you would need 3 video cards, the 3070 and dual quadros for the SLI mode and the 3070 is still going to be faster than dual quadros

Thank you DGroves, I also thought that the 3080 would be too much, better save some money and take the 3070 alone. I have access to one of the two configurations that I listed in the previous message at the same price because they are used, so the CPU is already there and I think is not worth the upgrade to a fastest CPU than the one that are already installed, maybe the better choice would be the z840 because is newer?

However do you think that a 0.5 GHz difference in single core could potentially affect the prestations of the system facing new game and graphic applications like the Adobe suits?

one last time, if possible get the z840
