Hello all,
I have an Z840 workstation running Windows 10 21H2 with BIOS version M60 v02.58, two E5-2697 v4 processors, 128GB of RAM, and a Quadro M4000. I have recently installed a pair of 4YF59AA Z Turbo Drive Dual Pro cards, each with a pair of SAMSUNG MZVKW512HMJP (so, 4 drives total) and I have installed the Samsung NVMe Controller driver from Samsung. I also have 4 512 GB Micron SSDs connected to the sSATA controller in a RAID 10 array. I have configured the slots they are using for bifurcation manually as "auto" does not seem to work - the setting has to be at a x4 so that all the drives on the adapter can be seen.
What I am seeing is that the enumeration of the drives changes depending on the slots they are in.
Starting with using Slot 6 for the drive hosting the boot volume and the second drive, in Device Manager under Disk Drives these drives are populated as "SAMSUNG MZVKW512HMJP-000H1" for the display name (but the "Bus reported device description" is "NVMe SAMSUNG MZVKW512 SCSI Disk Device").
However, the second adapter using Slot 5 populates both of the drives as "NVMe SAMSUNG MZVKW512 SCSI Disk Device" (with the same value for the "Bus reported device description").
And in the HP Performance Advisor, only the drive in Slot 5 gets populated in the block diagram - it shows up as a Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro, with two drives in it.
So I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the system will show only one of the adapters in the Performance Advisor and discovered that it will only show these adapters at all if they are in a slot that is connected to CPU 1. For example, if I move the cards around so that the GPU is in Slot 4 (CPU 1) and the Turbo Drives are in slots 6 and 2 (both CPU 0), they will not show in the Performance Advisor. If I move the GPU back to Slot 2 and the drives to Slot 3 (CPU 1) and Slot 5 (CPU 1), both adapters show in the Performance Advisor and all 4 of the drives get populated as "NVMe SAMSUNG MZVKW512 SCSI Disk Device" in the Device Manager.
I used PassMark to check performance and there are only small differences between having the boot drive on CPU 0 or CPU1.
So, my questions for the community:
-> The Z Turbo Drive Dual Pro card is not well documented so I am uncertain of the jumper settings for them. Neither the latest QuickSpecs or installation document covers the jumpers on the Dual! I think I have figured out address settings A, B, C, D based on the instructions for the Turbo Drive Quad, but it does not seem to matter if I change them from the default ("A") setting? I cannot seem to find the correct documentation for the jumpers on this card, if anyone has this it would be greatly appreciated if you could share.
-> It seems the same drivers are loaded regardless of naming in Device Manager. Does it matter that the devices are enumerated differently in Device Manager?
-> Does it matter that the devices are not seen in the HP Performance Advisor diagram when they are on CPU 0?
Thanks for reading!
