Thank you both Paul and DGroves for the wealth of information provided.

 

After performing the "FULL" cmos reset, I have followed your recomended Bios changes:

 

1. network boot -disabled - OK

2. LSI SAS/SCSI controller - could not find itnor figure it out

3. Intel AMT (remote managment) should remain disabled - I presume no action required - OK

 

I've connected a new hard drive (Toshiba) through the first of the SATA "normal" ports (grey plastic in case of my Z820), and with the two compatible drivers in sp56779, to my great relief, I was able to see it in my drive list during W7 x 64 installation.IMG_20181014_235044.jpg

if the LSI sas controller is working (and the bios is at the defaults) then during the bios boot screen you should see a msg posted that says " press ctrl + I to enter LSI boot menu"
