HP Z400 Base Model Workstation

im running an eariler hp z400 workstation ,and wanting to upgrade to the x5690 processor

the molther board has 6 mem slots,and is that something i can do my self?

Yes, the Xeon X5690 is compatible with your HP Z400 Workstation as this user shows: HP Z400 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark

 

Swapping a processor is pretty straightforward -even if this is the first time for you.  Here is a helpful YouTube instructional video for you (there are many others to watch): HP Z400 Xeon X5690 Processor Upgrade w/ 4 Memory Slot System Board.  Use a quality thermal paste, such as Arctic MX-4.
