I have a SATA III SSD in my Z600. It is so fat and Solidworks and Autodesk Fusion 360 run great. I have been reticent about upgrade to NVMe as it is not fully supported. If you want NVMe speed, you will need to upgrade to a newer Z workstation.

I tried that Corsair adapter, and it did not work perfectly in the drive drawers for our Z600/Z620/Z640/etc. HP workstations. For those who don't know..... the drive "drawers" in these workstations were all engineered to accept a 3.5" hard disk drive and when mounted in the drawer the rear SATA data and power connectors of the 3.5" HDD meshes perfectly with receiver connectors built into the rear of the drawer's slot. Thus, if you are going to mount a 2.5" SSD into one of these drawers you need an adapter that ends up perfectly matching the form factor of a 3.5" HDD. I found the Corsair adapter did not mount the SSD far enough rearward, so that a reliable connection was not made in all situations. That's pretty important....
It turns out HP did design and Foxconn did build for HP 2.5-to-3.5" adapters exactly for this job. You can see them by a search on eBay for 654540-001 or -002. This HP part is very well built, with a Foxconn "BlindMate" green PCB and black drive connector that meshes with the Foxconn BlindMate receiver built in to the HP case. A few sellers take that off and sell it separately. Only buy ones with that show it included. We have bought these from China with no issue for quantity buys that we are willing to wait for. The Corsair best price I found was about $6.00, and these HP units can be bought for about $8.00 each from eBay. We've bought over 100 of them, and they work perfectly every time in all HP workstations that use the drive drawer technology. The result exactly matches a 3.5" drive form factor drive.
There is a "tool free" one that HP sells for about 10 times more and if you ever see one it is same A+ quality, but I'll use a screwdriver and 4 screws to save $72.00 USD.
The link HERE lets you see one of those at the top... nice but not worth the extra cost when you get exact same quality with the eBay ones.
