I have several xw8600. One has developed a problem that it will shutdown with a few hours or a day. The LED has RED LED blink twice 1 second apart, followed by 2 seconds. The manual suggest this is a thermal issue and two check the fans or replaced the heat sinks for the processors.
When I boot the machine with the case open all fans are running. Anything else I can check/try before ordering new heat sinks?
Right now I have the case open with a house fan blowing on it and it seems to be keeping it up. It is 68 degrees in the room. Nothing looks weird in the bios. SHould i change the "Thermal" Setting?
Thanks

i owned a xw860 many many years ago, nowadays they are considered mostly obsolete as newer faster used systems can be bought quite cheaply so you may want to consider upgrading soon
with that said, the xw8600 was available with two different heatsinks the default single fan for cpu's of 120 watts or less and the dbl tall dual fan heatsink for 120 to 150 watt cpu's
the bios will give a error if a 120 watt or higher cpu is used with the stock heatsink
it's possible for a system to overheat if the cpu load is running at max usage for extend periods of time using the default case fan profile, try increasing the default case fan speed in the bios, and if using the stock single fan coolers look on ebay for a double tall heatsink
also make sure the ram cooler fan is installed, it sits just under the rear case fan and is the one that can be tilted up as it's hinged

thanks. it has the taller heat sinks and the memory fan and all fans are running. increasing the main fan didn't help.
Trying to figure out if it is really overheating or something else. because I can just let it idle with vmware esxi running and nothing else and it with die. i know they are old. they were old when i bought them many years ago 😉

if thermal issue's can be ruled out, that leaves software i would install a application that monitors the cpu temps in realtime such as "Libre Hardware Monitor" net ver4.7.2
and also a app that monitors used and free ram,..... again "Libre Hardware Monitor" will do this
you can also check the windows crash logs for what triggered the crash
- Open the Event Viewer by pressing Windows + X
- Navigate to Windows Logs > System
- Look for any critical errors or warnings around the time of the crash
- Selecting Administrative Tools from the Windows Control Panel
- Double-clicking Event Viewer
- Selecting the type of logs that you wish to review (ex: Windows Logs)

then find the linux equivalents,....................
also download memtest 86+ and run it many xw8600's had bad connections between dimm and mem socket due to the age of the systems cleaning the connections can help
for dimms use a soft pencil eraser to polish the contacts and then clean with 98% alcohol
for the sockets use a commercial contact cleaner DESIGNED FOR THIS, products such as wd40 or tv contact cleaners are not suitable
