PREAMBLE:

I have two computers. One is this old standby Dell/Win7 and the other is a HP z-400. The Z400 only has blank HDDs (more below) and a  very old BIOS, no O/S. Yet.

HP peeps this desktop, and forces me to updates for Win 7 (this desktop) not the Z-400. and it's *A.I thinks(?)  I want it for this desktop.  I can't block HP's peeps from detecting this so I can bypass the forced solution to what I need.

ISSUE:

  1. I want to update the BIOS from 1.14 to latest on my Z-400
    ::: Z-400 has NO O/S installed
  2. I did search Google. I also searched the Internet. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is to add my email as another drop-off for sales pitches just to ask one question. Whose winning, us, or spammers?
  3. I won't be installing the upgrades on this standby-Dell, but would on the z-400.
  4. I will be installing 2 HDDS at 2Tb each. One each will be a Linux flavour. Ubuntu, Pure_OS, Pop_OS, and Deb with a Boot menu to choose O/S and a third HDD as universal access for all O/S's
  5. Windows, if ever, will be on a separate HDD disconnected unless needed and Boot to that from Bios - a good deterrent.

BLATHER:

So I'm looking it up here now, with this query, in this topic - please help as it seems the 'how-to' without O/S is just a ruse.

Once I have a BIOS (or set of them) upgrade/s I can go from there. If HP would let me get what I want, not what it says it's A.I. wants, I wouldn't be bothering the few fine people here that donate their time.

ADDENDUM:

BTW - I put a Win 10 HDD in to see if I could get to "Legacy Enable" and "Disable Secure Boot", neither of which are in the existing BIOS.

When I boot to Boot Manager, I see:

Windows 10

Windows 7 Installation (All data will be lost)

NeoSmart Linux
NeoGrub Bootloader

I wasn't able to see any way to change in the BIOS and anyway, there won't be any Windows

Thank you kindly for taking the time to help,  I owe you,

~s~

Hi:

Download the latest BIOS update onto your Dell PC.   Run the file.

3.61

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84161.exe

An info page will open.   Read the instructions under this section...

F10 Setup BIOS Flashing

The HP Workstation system supported by this Softpaq provides a BIOS upgrade option through F10 setup using the “Flash System ROM” feature.  Reboot the PC and press F10 to enter setup.  In the File menu, select the “Flash System ROM” item.  This flash utility will present the user with the option to select the media containing the BIOS image file (XXX_MMmm.bin).  The binary image file is contained in the DOS Flash directory and is named XXX_MMmm.bin where "XXX" is the abbreviated BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number.  F10 ROM based flash can accept the binary file from the root directory of any removable media such as USB or CD. On the Z800, Z600, and Z400 platforms the floppy diskette is no longer supported as a BIOS flash device as the ROM image is too large to fit on the floppy disks.  The BIOS CD Media file, included in this Softpaq, should be used to create a BIOS image CD.  When flashing with F10 ROM based flash, the CD media must be El-Torito compatible.  The user is prompted when the process is completed.  The new BIOS code will not take effect until the PC is rebooted.

View Contents of DOS Flash Folder

Here is what you do...

Get a USB flash drive.   Format it with the FAT32 file system.

Copy the file contents of the DOS flash folder to your USB flash drive.  Just the files, not the folder.

Remove the flash drive from your Dell PC.

Plug it into your z400.

Turn it on and press the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F10 setup option and press the enter key to get access to the BIOS.

Select the File tab>Flash System ROM command.

Select the USB flash drive.

The PC should 'see' the files on the flash drive.

Follow the onscreen instructions to update the BIOS.

Thanks @Paul_Tikkanen. This helped and things are rolling along smoothly now.

However, I am disappointing in HP for using so many Stalkers. In order to sign up/in I had to disable them. The only reason they exist was to record my browser history, fingerprint my APU, CPU, GPU, and to follow me around at HP. And to attach more stalkers to follow and report back where I go.

When I visit HPs house, HP has every right to follow me around, record what I do, for how long, using what device, and from what location.  But no one authorized any site to pimp out our rights to privacy, and there is no reason for HP to do so. I won''t be back as long as I can avoid the site.

Sadly,
