Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection is due to something (a conflict most likely) preventing the driver from loading i don't think the nic port itself is bad

from device manager, select the nic then right click uninstall (do not remove driver) now reboot and hopefully the driver issue will sort itself out

i've seen this happen with window installs on various devices over the years and a OS reinstall usually always fixed it if the trick above failed although sometimes we had to add/remove or change the slot order of installed add in cards

Thanks for the suggestions.

The simple step of uninstalling through Device Manager did not set things right. On a second attempt, I uninstalled both the 82574L and the 82579LM and, on reboot, the same situation is present - the one came back cleanly, the other could not start.

I have two video cards installed, but don't really need the second, so I could try removing it. No other slots in service.

I'm not planning to go to the trouble of resetting the PC or reinstalling the OS by any other means any time soon - unless other issues crop up (touch wood). So far, things are running smooth, quiet (fans) and on time (no clock drift).

get a linux distro that runs from the disk/usb key, see if it sees both network ports as working if so the issue is software/config issue

if the linux os sees a failed/non working nic port consider exchanging the system board or ask for a discount from the seller as the onboard nic is most likely bad

I'm not familiar with ubuntu, so I don't know if there's a way to get deeper under the hood than the settings I found, but it appears that it only sees one NIC. Images below.

I also notice that the BIOS System Information looks suspect. On my old board, the NICs' MAC addresses were one character different from each other. On this board, the AMT NIC looks hashed.

Many thanks for your continued interest and help!

It looks as though the image of the BIOS System Information page may not be displaying, so by “hashed”, I mean: FFFFFFFFFFFF.

your board appears to have a hardware fault on the lan port ubuntu will detect both lan ports when using the "live" os feature

since it is failing along with your installed windows to detect this port my opinion is that the port has a hardware based fault

as i previously stated contact the seller for a refund/replacement or credit adjustment
