We need to deploy the latest Synaptics drivers to a large number of different HP laptops and we also need to update the Intel ME firmware on the same laptops and c. 10,000 desktops.
SSM (System Software Manager) looks ideal for this - you download all the relevant drivers, automatically create a database and run the SSM program on each machine. We can make that last bit happen using SCCM.
I've been testing it on a small number of machines. The Intel ME firmware update works well but the Synaptics driver doesn't work.
What I've found when I manually run the SSM program is that it's failing to install the Synaptics driver because I have a newer version already installed.
What I want to do know is if there's a switch I can use in SSM to say "do nothing if there's already a newer version present"
Thanks.

I am not understanding what you want.
Does the newer version remove the "keylogger" ? If so, it is correct to leave it installed.
Can you find a key in the Windows Registry that identifies the currently-installed version?

I'm sure I could find such a registry key but the point of SSM is that I shouldn't need to do that - SSM is intended to be used for automating system software deployment but it fails to work.
SSM reads the CVA file in each of the updates to find out what it needs to do to run the update. It looks as if some updates which should run silently don't work properly so the SSM run fails.
HP make superb hardware but miserably poor software and they just don't seem to have tools which can be used to update drivers/firmware/BIOS on thousands of computers. I think that this is ridiculous for a company which is supposed to be suitable for the enterprise!
