.docx is the Word 2007/2010 new document extension.
If you have Word 2003 or earlier, please go here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/open-a-word-2007-document-in-an-earlier-version-of-word-...
and this will give you what you need to do.

If doesn’t help then:

In Windows explorer, right-click a .docx file and select "Open With..."
In the dialog box that follows, select "Microsoft Office Word", or browse to the Office program files location and select WINWORD.EXE.
Make sure you select the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

If doesn’t help the only thing I can advise is to try to restore database using Word Recovery Toolbox. http://www.oemailrecovery.com/word_recovery.html

Hi:

You need Microsoft Word 2007 or newer to open docx files, or if you have Microsoft Office 2003 or XP you need to install this compatiblility pack.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3

If you just need to view (not edit, etc) the file, you can install the Microsoft Word viewer.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4

If you need to edit, etc., and you don't have Microsoft Office, then you can install this free office type software which will allow you to view and edit word and excel documents.
