Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
Scanning large data can use more resources and some other tasks.
The application does not typically "eat" more resource than needed for the job.
That said, in general, the app should not be drawing more and more resources and slowing down.
If the data (current scan data / scan job) is of reasonable size,
(and)
If the system is not in need of Windows Updates (check / run / restart of the system),
(and)
If the system is generally healthy,
(then)
Try / Consider...
If you have not done so,
Restart Everything, including the router that controls your network.
Try again...
No Joy?
Try / consider
Reset the HP Smart Application
Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.
Open Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
Search and Find HP Smart in the apps list
Open Advanced options > Reset the app
Restart the computer and log in
Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)
HP_Smart_Win_Apps-and-Features_ Reset_3
No Joy?
If the app Reset does not work,
If you have not done so,
Consider / Try
Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
Search or scroll down and find HP Smart
Left-Click on the item > Uninstall
Restart the computer and log in
"Get" a new copy of the Application from the Microsoft Store
