I have no problem with the ink subscription program as an idea, but your implementation of it is predatory and wastes ink. I just spent 45 minutes not printing from my printer that had over 80% of its ink left (ink that came with the printer) and missed a deadline. I eventually discovered that the reason is that I didn't enroll in the ink subscription after the 6 month trial. There should never be an instance that I have a viable ink cartridge in hand and I can't use it. The initial ink cartridges are somehow tagged as part of the subscription and can't be used if the subscription is not active. This creates waste if I don't enroll or dis-enroll later. I now have to throw away four 80% full cartridges that I have in hand, that you won't re-use, just because I didn't enroll in the subscription. If I do enroll, and dis-enroll later, I won't be able to use the cartridges that you would have sent me. I can't even give these away to someone with a subscription because it won't affect you sending out more ink to the subscriber, the subscriber will just have more ink than they can use. This is waste out of spite and a pain in the ass from an operational standpoint.

You should take the following corrective actions:

- Make an informative error message when the subscription is out so the user knows to change the ink cartridges to print.

- Any ink you sell with a printer should be usable by the buyer. If they subscribe, send them "subscription" ink later.

- Any ink a user has should be usable. Figure out the subscription billing/pricing such that a printer is not disabled just because the ink subscription is not current for good reasons or errors.
