Last week purchased HP Notebook 15BS121NR and installed Ubuntu 18.04LTS.
The wifi won't work, so came here for answers. Found this thread
Realtek 8723DE wifi module & Bluetooth Linux driver available now - Ubuntu/Fedora/Arch users*
It worked but I ran into weak signal issue. Beyond 10 ft it won't connect to wifi.
Also the make install method did not work, dkms method worked.
Searched internet and found this driver contributed by a good soul.
smlinux/rtl8723de
I uninstalled the earlier 'official' version and followed smlinux's 5 line instructions and it worked like a charm!
When I went through the original thread again, Jeremy31 had pointed to the same smlinux/rtl8723de repository and the author of the thread disapproved it.
I am posting this for folks who also might have purchased HP PC/laptops with the same rtl8723de chipset and trying to use it with Ubuntu 18.04 without luck. So if you had no luck with the 'official version' then please use smlinux/rtl8723de and get on with your life!
Double benefits -
1. You continue using your favorite Linux
2. It proves once again the importance of open source and also individual efforts (like from smlinux )
So please don't nix something when someone's tried it and is saying it works better.
In the end everyone benefits!
Best
