When I purchased 7440 on 4/7/2023, HP helped me install HP Smart (used for ordering ink, printing, scan, etc, and HP Scan (only for scanning). Tech Support advised that Windows 11 doesn't support I.R.I.S. (Scan) so HP app no longer able to scan as text. Work around is to scan as PDF and then use Adobe to convert to text. Please let me know if there is anothe workaround that would enable me to install a free version of I.R.I.S. or Abby Fine Reader so that I can scan as text again.

Hi @MLG-1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're looking for alternatives to scan as text without using paid software like I.R.I.S. or ABBYY FineReader, here are some options.
Windows Built-in OCR: Windows 11 includes some built-in OCR capabilities that might work for your needs:
- Use the OneNote app, which has OCR functionality. Paste the scanned image into OneNote, right-click on it, and select "Copy Text from Picture."
- Windows Snipping Tool with OCR capabilities may also be helpful for extracting text from screenshots.
HP Smart App: Check if there's been an update or a new version of the HP Smart app or any other HP utilities that support OCR on Windows 11.
Adobe Acrobat Reader: If you already use Adobe Acrobat Reader, its free version offers limited OCR capabilities. You might not get all the features of the paid version, but it can handle basic text extraction.
These methods should help you scan documents as text without the need for premium software.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
