Hi,

I bought a used Designjet 4000. He came, I started the printer and he started printing a testchart with colors about 30 x 40 cm. Then he stopped and showed an error 86:01. There was no paperjam, but the belt was in a very bad condition. So I changed the belt, but the error occurs further.

As a precaution I changed the encoder strip, but the printer still showed the error

Running the scan axis test in the service mode works for a long way. The Printing Unit moves to the middle, can be moved by pressing the arrows, it tries the printway by moving to the left and right, the distance ist ok. When coming out the right side after that, it moves about 10 cm and stops with error 86:01.

The display shows the long version of the error:

Of course I cleaned and oiled the slider rod and carriage assembly. The carriage assembly can be moved smooth, I would say.

I changed the motor, driving the belt – no change. I called the HP-Support, they commended to change the power supply, I did with no change again.

I can't understand, that the printer first worked with a poor belt and now in test mode moves over the whole printway for several times before running into the error. And changing part after part on spec, will be an expensive way, I think. Any idea? Thanks.

After changing a lot of parts - the reason was the new belt! I would say, I've got no original HP one, but a China-part. Unfortunately I can't prove it, but after changing the belt against one original, the error was gone.

Have you checked the printhead cleaners. Make sure they are seated correctly as the carriage moving over them on the way out if it hits one it will shoot the error.

They are in a correct position.

To make sure remove the cleaners with the power off and then turn on the plotter and see if it gets to ask for the cleaners or the error message. Only other item I can think of is the carriage assembly main board.

Removing the cleaners doesn't change anything. Error 86:01

I have had the paper path sensor cause this error before, have you checked to see there is nothing obstructing that? The sensor itself could be bad as well. I have also had a call where I had a similar issue, in which I replaced the scan axis motor, the encoder strip and sensor, the line sensor, and paper path sensor. All with no change. I replaced the print mech pca, and voila!!!! Error gone and the plotter runs like a champ.

I have checked, that there is nothing obstructing the paper path sensor and the the paper path sensor itself.


The print mech is one of the next parts, to think about for sure. But it also could be the carriage PCA, the interconnect PCA or the main PCA. Or the carriage itself? I'm a little afraid of changing part after part on spec, because there might be a point, where buying another used printer would be cheaper than the parts.
