Black is not working, when I print a test page it will print the dark black [brackets] but the black one is empty. I have cleaned the head multiple times, pulled the head out and cleaned by hand. Tried new black cartridge and old one. Problem still persist.

Do you see any evidence of spilled ink. often element on the page such as the square are printed using composite (three colors) not the black which would explain why you see the black square but not the ink level. Did the printer sit unused for a long time? If so the black segment of the head may be clogged and you might have to replace the printhead if manual cleaning did not solve the problem. To manually clean you place the head in a container on folder paper towel and then add some warm water in an amount that only covers the paper towel. Too much water will cause water to get where you do not want it. leave it to soak for at least 30 minutes. Then let dry, reinsert and try again. If you get a little bit of black, leave the printer on overnight as the bit of ink that is now getting in can loosen up the clog. If you still get nothing you are probably out of luck and have to buy a printhead.

Yes, it sat for about a year since the last time I used it. when you say place it in warm water, do you just mean the very bottom of the print head where the ink would come out?

also do not see any evidence of spilled ink. when i pull the black cartridge out it does have black ink on it, so i know the cartridge is "good".

As stated fold a paper towel over a couple of time and set the printhead on that paper towel and then add the water until the paper towel is covered and it will wick the paper against the printhead elements. Too much water will cause problems
