After installing a new gray ink cartridge, the display says that cartridge needs to be replaced.

The info section says the new cartridge has an expiration date of 01/01/1970 when it is actually 08/2022.

Hi @TomMHSM

If after installing the old cartridge the printer keeps reporting the same 1970 date there is an issue with the ink supply station but if the printer shows fine the date of the old ink cartridge then you got a defective brand new ink cartridge that I will recommend either calling your supplier or HP for its warranty.
