This is a PageWide 577dw mfp.  I have tried running through the various cleanings several times.  I have cleaning the waste ink tray and the print heads. It will print blue just fine, but black has gotten worse with every try.

Hi @aristigon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already. Since the printer is printing blue but not black, it suggests that the issue might be specific to the black ink cartridge or the black ink system. Here are a few additional steps you could try.

  • Check the Black Cartridge: Ensure that the black ink cartridge is properly installed and seated correctly. Sometimes, cartridges may not make proper contact, leading to printing issues.
  • Replace the Black Cartridge: Even if it's a new cartridge, it's possible that it's defective. Try replacing it with another new cartridge to see if that resolves the issue.
  • Check for Ink Flow: Sometimes, ink can dry out or become clogged in the printhead or ink delivery system. Check if the black ink is flowing properly from the cartridge to the printhead. You might need to perform a deeper cleaning or use a printhead cleaning solution.
  • Update Firmware and Drivers: Make sure your printer's firmware and drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes, compatibility issues or bugs in the software can cause printing problems.

By systematically going through these steps, you should be able to pinpoint the issue and hopefully resolve it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

This is called black ink fade and occurs when the pigment from the black in separates from the carrier solution and sinks to the bottom and clogs the nozzles in the printhead. HP reformulated inks a few years ago to reduce/stop this issue. The solution is this. You first need to ensure that you have a current ink cartridge. I believe that changeover was sometime in 2022 but my reference site is currently down. Once you have a new cartridge in hand, you must update the firmware to the current revision which has counter measures to avoid future blockages. Once that is done you need to print 100 pages of all black pages. Document must be black as close to the edge as possible to ensure all print dies are activated. You may not see 100 % clearing immediately. If there are still some dead elements, leave the printer  on overnight and then perform a head cleaning the next day. In our shop we have had about an 85% success rate in recovering printheads this way.

I was not able to get through this step.  I made sure the firmware was up to date and sen the print job.  It went through about 15 to 20 pages and got a print system failure error.
