Hello everyone,

I have an HP DesignJet 500 Plus (connected via USB, using Windows 10) that recently started showing the message:
“Insert Setup Printheads” on the front panel.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Power cycled the printer multiple times

  • Removed and reinserted all printheads

  • Checked carriage cables and printhead contacts

  • Updated drivers on Windows 10

From what I’ve read, this error usually means the NVM (non-volatile memory) has been lost or corrupted, and the printer now believes it needs the original setup printheads (which I no longer have).

I understand that HP used to provide a DesignJet Service Utility or System Maintenance Utility that could reinitialize or rewrite the NVM, but I can’t find a legitimate download anywhere on HP’s website or documentation.

My questions:

  1. Is there any official way to reinitialize the NVM or reset this error?

  2. Does anyone still have access to the HP DesignJet 500/800 Service Utility, or can HP Support provide a copy?

  3. Would updating the firmware through the HP System Maintenance Utility help restore the NVM?

I also have access to an older PC with Windows XP (SP3) if that helps with compatibility.

Any guidance or advice from HP technicians or users who’ve fixed this issue before would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Thank you in advance for your help,

Paulo

This AI article discusses your problem.  If you get it to work please post how you did it so i can add it my my list of "bypass" printers.  I do not have a 500 to test with.
