HP DesignJet T2600dr system error immediately after inserting smart card.

Plotter is configured with Netgard device for smart card authentication. I can authenticate just fine when I select scan and it prompts me to insert my card and input pin. However, if I just insert my card at the home screen it will immediately give me a system error and force a reboot. "Restart the device. Check that your firmware is up to date. If problem persists, call your support representative." Details page just shows an ASSERT_ERROR but I wasn't able to find much with just that. Firmware is all up to date

When I've worked with HP devices in the past, inserting smart card at the home screen still allows me to authenticate after prompting for pin. Is this by design as a security feature or something that is a known issue?  .Thank you.
