Microsoft Windows 11

I purchased a new HP 711 printhead replacement kit. (printhead + new cartridges in the box). I followed the instructions on the plotter to remove the old cartridges and old printhead. I followed the instructions to install the new printhead and related cartridges. At first the machine had an error along the lines of "remove leaky cartridges, check and replace them ". I assessed each NEW cartridge and they didn't appear to be leaking. However I could not move past that error, so I did a hard reset on the plotter by pulling the power while the machine was on.

After the reset, the machine displayed a different error as follows, "Not enough ink to complete startup. Cartridges used during initialization must be NEW. Open the Ink Door to replace indicated cartridges or press OK to insert another PHA." (All 4 cartridge colours are depicted below this error message).

I removed the already NEW cartridges that were supplied in the box and reinserted them. However this error message continues. It's a bit confusing. First they were "leaking" cartridges and now they have no ink, even though they came straight out the box brand new as supplied in the as part of the printhead kit.

Any suggestions on how to proceed to finish the new printhead installation and start using the plotter again? Is there a way of manually triggering ink supply from the cartridges?

Hello DEBCal,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Troubleshooting HP 711 Printhead and Cartridge Installation

If you are facing issues with installing a new HP 711 printhead and cartridges package, and the printer is indicating an error related to leaky cartridges, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Steps to Troubleshoot:

  1. Inspect the Cartridges:

    • Carefully remove each new cartridge from the printer.
    • Inspect the nozzles and connectors for any signs of ink residue or damage.
    • Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth if necessary.
  2. Reseat the Cartridges:

    • After inspection, securely reseat each cartridge in its designated slot. Ensure you hear a click that indicates they are securely in place.
  3. Inspect the Printhead:

    • Ensure that the printhead is correctly installed. Remove and then reinstall it to make sure it is seated properly.
    • Check for any packaging material that might not have been removed.
  4. Perform a Printer Reset:

    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.
  5. Check for Firmware Updates:

    • Ensure that your printer is running the latest firmware version, as updates can fix known bugs and ink system-related issues.
  6. Perform a Hard Reset:

    • You may try performing a hard reset by holding down the power button while disconnecting the power cord. Reconnect the power while holding the button down, then release it when prompted.
  7. Leakage Concerns:

    • Even if cartridges do not visibly leak, ensure that they are inserted without excess pressure, which could simulate leakage by improper seating.
    • if still same issue, try this:
    • check the firmware version; press the power button during 15 seconds, and access the support
menu Access 3.5 ‘Reset PHA Startup Condition’.
    • Type ‘PIN’ number 2873, and select OK.70007_0-1765475802860.png

Further Action:

If the error persists after performing these steps, it may indicate a problem with the cartridges or printhead themselves. In such cases:

  • Contact Support: Reach out to HP Customer Support for further assistance. If the products are under warranty, you may be eligible for replacement.

  • Review Warranty: Double-check your warranty eligibility, especially since you have just purchased these components.

Thank you kindly. I will try these suggestions step-by-step and respond thereafter.

The plotter is offline at present, as where it is located does not have an internet connection. Is there an offline method to update firmware?

Also, I did try a hard reset after the current error "not enough ink..." and the machine restarts with the same error and no way of moving past that error. Am I correct in assuming that pressing the power button for 15 seconds will "move past" the error by accessing the support menu?

Hello DEBCal,

Thank you for the updates.

We can’t update the firmware in usb method and if printer is stuck on error message, if still it’s a complex way.

  1. Pressing the power button for 15 seconds will move it to support menu even with PHA error
  2. Request you to fix the printhead error message first with option provided reset pha startup condition with same ink came with new print head, you should get message success, if fails, try with other new inks, if still same request you to contact HP support for assistance on new PHA issues and further resolution.
  3. Once all fine and ready, please connect printer in network for, use HP DesignJet utility for firmware updates.
