HP DesignJet T650 24-in Printer

Good day!

Working with a DesignJet T650 large format printer.  The roll will not load.  There has not been a paper jam.  The printer is two years old and only has use every now and then. I read that there is a sensor that can get ink on it, however I cannot find a service manual to locate where the sensors are and the appropriate steps to take the shell off to get to the sensors.  Any advice is welcome.

Message: The printer cannot detect or load the media. Try using a different media and avoid transparent type of media. (I am using plain paper and put a new roll on after I got this message, but it still persists.)

The first thing to check ifs that the roll is tight to the spindle.   Grab the black end and the roll of paper and make sure they are firmly attached and tight to one another.   Use folded paper in the wings of the spindle to tighten the paper connection if needed or try a different roll.

If you are loading the roll and it wont grab the roll and start feeding then you remove the back sheet loader.   Remove a small cover covering a thin cable and then you can squeeze the two tabs and remove the paper switch.  Might be paper jammed around it preventing it from triggering when paper gets pushed in.

If the paper loads in and goes back and forth a bit then stops sticking out the front by one inch and says something like "cant detect paper" then its the line sensor.     The printhead may be leaking and has got ink on the service station brush and it in turn has smeared ink on the line sensor lens.     Pull the printhead out and look underneath ink should not have big buildups on the black plastic.    On the service station (Right Endcap) there is a brush on the right side that cleans a sensor (of dust?) under the carriage.   If its black clean it till its not black.     If you push the carriage most of the way to the left there is a place you can put the carriage (line sensor id the small protrusion on the right side of carriage) where you can get one small finger with one thin rag over it under the line sensor to clean the lens.   The platten is solid but there is a lower part in a small area.  put the line sensor over that area.    Other wise you have to disassemble things.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer.  I am going to see what I can find.

I did everything in the first paragraph before making this post.  I just did everything in the second paragraph and did not see any paper. After putting everything back together I tried to load the roll again.  It did detect the paper, but where it used to grab the paper and bring it to the front, it still doesn't grab the paper. This might be the feed, correct? I took off the long black bar behind where the roll goes (there is a small blue tab (button) that releases it) and the rollers seem fine.  From previous experience I know that they can be touchy and that is why I am leaning in that direction.  Thoughts? Thank you for responding.
