We recently switched internet companies. Now we cannot hook up our HP Deskjet All in One Printer. 4200e.  It says it doesn't exist. Can anyone help?? We aren't setting it up through a computer. Just the internet and our cell phone app.

Welcome to the HP Community --

The printer's own user manual is a good reference -- it explains much of what you'll need to know to make this work.

Note:

The manual still refers to the "HP Smart" application.

Since Fall of 2025, the HP Smart mobile app has been replaced with the HP App.

Some of what you see in the printer user guide might be outdated and other information might still be OK.

and

I've included information about the HP App later in this message.

AND

Should you wish to do so, read the parts about how to Restore your network settings for your printer and then bounce down to read about using the HP App.

Start --

What about this printer and connecting it to your (new) network?

For example,

The printer only supports 2.4GHz connection.  This means your router must be configured to offer the 2.4GHz frequency for those devices that need it (like your printer).  See your router's user manual or ask for help from your network provider.

AND

The needed default PIN needed for some EWS settings -- on Page 7

User manual:

User Guide - HP Deskjet 2800e DeskJet 4200e All in One Series

Read

Chapter 2 - Connect your printer - Starting on Page 9

What about that old network?

If the printer thinks it is still on the "old" network, it cannot connect to your new network.

The old printer network information can be "cleared" so the printer can find and connect to your current network.

For example, go to Page 53

Topics

Reset printer network settings from the control panel

and

Restore printer factory defaults or network settings from EWS

After restoring the printer network defaults, go back to Page 9 and continue.

If you want to try and use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to connect your printer, to to Page 11.

What about?

Using EWS is (should be) easy -- it can connected to your printer using your Browser.

As long as your printer is on your network and you are trying to access EWS on that same network, EWS has a good chance of making the connection process easier.

Read "Access and Use the EWS" notes on Page 24 to understand the steps.

If your browser absolutely refuses to connect you through to your printer using EWS, try a different browser.

Continue on and read Page 25

Read Topic Open the EWS using an IP address (Wi-Fi connection)

Next,

Wireless

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

As Available:

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Example - EWS - Connect to Wireless Network

EWS_9025_Network_IPv4_Configuration_7EWS_9025_Network_IPv4_Configuration_7

What if?

Once the printer is connected to your network, the HP App (on your mobile device) should have less trouble finding the printer.

and / or

Presumably, too, after the old network information is removed from the printer, the HP App might be able to find and actually complete the whole connection.

No VPN and make sure your mobile device is running both Location Services and Bluetooth.

The printer does not use Bluetooth -- the App uses a Bluetooth burst to locate the printer.

It's less weird than it sounds,

I have the following information that might help, including a couple of videos -- perhaps not fun to watch on a tiny phone screen, but here we are.

HP has replaced the HP Smart Mobile application with the HP App.

The HP App is available at the App Store for your mobile device.

 HP printer setup (HP app)

Read the FAQs

For example:

What are the HP app requirements?

And / or

Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP app?

And / or

Why can't I connect my wireless printer or print over the network?

Reminders -- Initial Connection

  • Your Mobile device (tablet, phone) must be on the same network as the printer.
  • On that mobile device, Location Services and Bluetooth should both be switched ON

-- Be Aware –

Any HP application you install should be sourced from “HP”.

What?  Fakes have been discovered on at least one Mobile App Store –

Check who is providing the application >> “HP Inc.”

If you can’t tell, ask or use the Homepage method (if using Windows) to download and install the HP Smart application.
