Here are possible causes:

1. optical encoder strip is dirty and cannot be read. This strip runs the length of the carriage and has a microfine grid that can become polluted with ink mist. Take a cup of water, add a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (less than 10% by volume.) Moisten a soft cloth and gently clean the strip.

2. Line sensor is dirty. This is difficult to deal with as you need to disassemble the printer to get to it.

also make sure that you have the current firmware installed on the printer.

Have HP ENVY 5530  I seem to be having alignment issues.  In the the FIRST page printed after installation of an ink cartridge is OUT OF ALIGNMENT, when the printer SCANS that page, it keeps the BAD alignment.  Any solutions?

If I have to take this apart, any videos on how to DO this?  Thanks so much!!
