hp HP DesignJet 500-800 Firmware Upgrade Tool
Firmware A.05.01 is going to be copied to connected on USB port USB002. Warning! Check that installed firmware version is A.02.06 or newer before proceeding further. Contact HP support if printer firmware version is lower than A.02.06. my plotter has the machine firmware A.05.01 and the formatter firmware A.04.02. What can I do to solve this problem?

Hello,

Before I give you a direct resolution, I need two critical details — because the DesignJet 500/800 series has separate Machine Firmware and Formatter Firmware, and upgrade failures depend entirely on how the plotter is connected and which path you’re using.

I need you to confirm:

  1. How are you connecting to the plotter for the upgrade?

    • USB?

    • Parallel (LPT)?

    • Network Jetdirect card?

  2. Does the plotter boot normally and print a full configuration/plotter information page?
(I need to know if the formatter board is fully healthy.)

Once I have those, I’ll give you the exact, correct resolution.

However — here is what your symptom typically means:

You already have Machine Firmware A.05.01, but your Formatter Firmware is older (A.04.02).
The HP firmware upgrade tool warns you about versions older than A.02.06, but your formatter is newer than that — so the warning itself is not the problem.

The real problem is usually one of these:

  • The USB virtual printer port (USB002) cannot correctly transfer HPGL/2 firmware blocks

  • The Formatter board is failing and cannot accept firmware updates

  • The upgrade tool expects a bidirectional parallel or Jetdirect-based connection, not USB

  • The firmware packages for DesignJet 500/800 are extremely sensitive to corrupted transfers

I’ll confirm the exact cause once you answer the two questions above.

If the formatter board is not accepting firmware, then this becomes a hardware formatter failure, and in that case the only available option is ship-to-depot repair.
