My design jet t230  is displaying " cartridge problem" I assumed ink needed to be replaced. when I open door to replace the ink, the cartridges do not move for me to replace. 1) is the problem that the ink needs to be replaced? 2) what else should I look for? Printer is only 2 years old, and only used 1 or 2x monthly

Hello Susibee,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Troubleshooting "Cartridge Problem" on HP DesignJet T230

The "cartridge problem" error on your HP DesignJet T230 could be due to a variety of reasons, including issues with the ink cartridge itself or the printer's mechanics. Here's how you can troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

  1. Check the Error Message:

    • Verify the specific error message displayed on the printer screen. Sometimes it specifies which cartridge is causing the issue.
  2. Inspect Ink Cartridges:

    • Open the cartridge access door again.
    • Ensure that the cartridges are firmly installed. Press down on each cartridge to make sure it is snapped into place.
    • Check for any visible signs of damage, such as leaks or cracks.
  3. Perform a Printer Reset:

    • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
    • Wait for about 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer. This can sometimes resolve electronic issues.
  4. Update Printer Firmware:

    • Ensure the printer's firmware is up to date. Visit the HP Support page for your printer model to download and install the latest updates.
  5. Use Original HP Ink Cartridges:

    • Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Non-HP cartridges can cause compatibility issues leading to errors.
  6. Manually Move the Printhead:

    • Ensure the printer is powered on. If necessary, gently move the carriage by hand when the printer is off to see if it is stuck or obstructed.
  7. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions:

    • Look for and clear any paper jams or obstructions in the printer. Carefully remove stuck paper without tearing it.
  8. Inspect Cartridge Contacts:

    • Turn off the printer, remove the cartridges, and gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the printer with a lint-free cloth. If same issue , if no internal damage, please replace the printhead to fix the issue.
  9. Contact HP Support:

    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contacting HP Support for further assistance might be necessary, especially if the printer is still under warranty.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and hopefully fix the cartridge problem with your HP DesignJet T230.
