paper binding up - spindle very hard to turn and won't feed into printer.  Using a new 24" x 500' roll.  Works fine with 44" paper that is near the end of roll.  Have taken 24" roll out and reinserted many time to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated

Is this a standard roll or oversized. The only way the spindle will not turn is if the paper is hitting the inside of the bay where the spindle sits. If the roll is oversized you have to remove a large amount from the rolls to get it down to a thickness that will be accepted in the roll feed. Remember the spindle turns when the paper is pulled in by the rollers on the inside of the printer. In other words the spindle is free moving and the only thing that will prevent it from turning is if the roll is to thick (diameter).
