I frequently get the error message (every few minutes)

SmartAudio3.exe - System Error
Exception Processing Message 0xc0000005 - Unexpected parameters

Running diagnostics shows nothing. I've reinstalled the audio drivers.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks.

Hi @Bob_ex,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Which version of Windows are you running (Windows 10 or 11)?
  • Did this error start after a recent update or driver installation?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try :

  • Reinstall OEM audio drivers (not just update): Go to the HP support page for your exact PC model and download the full audio driver package provided there. A clean reinstall often resolves SmartAudio3.exe issues better than updating through Device Manager.
  • Disable SmartAudio startup: If the error persists, you can temporarily disable SmartAudio3.exe from starting with Windows. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, go to the Startup tab, and disable SmartAudio. This won’t remove your audio functionality but may stop the pop-ups.
  • Check for corrupted system files: Run sfc /scannow in Command Prompt (as Administrator). This scans and repairs Windows system files that could be triggering the 0xc0000005 error.
  • Update BIOS/Chipset drivers: Sometimes audio-related errors are linked to outdated firmware or chipset drivers. Check HP’s support website for the latest updates for your model.

I hope this helps.
