If it is the case that your microphone passes HP’s test and records audio, but Copilot can’t hear you, that usually means it’s a permissions or settings issue rather than a hardware fault. A few things to check:
Confirm Default Microphone
Right-click the 🔊 sound icon in the taskbar → Sound settings → under Input, make sure the correct microphone is selected as the default.
Test it there as well to confirm Windows is picking it up.
Check App Permissions
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Make sure Microphone access is turned On.
Scroll down and verify that Copilot (and other apps you use) are allowed to access the microphone.
Update Audio Drivers
In Device Manager, expand Audio inputs and outputs → right-click your microphone → Update driver.
You can also install the latest drivers from HP Support or Windows Update.
Test in Another App
Try recording in Voice Recorder or using a call in MS Teams/Zoom.
If it works there, the issue is definitely limited to Copilot settings or permissions.
Copilot Settings
If you’re using the Copilot app (rather than built-in Windows Copilot), check within the app’s settings if there is a microphone option. Some versions require manually choosing the input device.
If your mic works everywhere else but not with Copilot, it’s almost always permissions or app-specific settings, not the microphone itself.
