HP Audio Controls equalizer does nothing

The HP Audio Controls equalizer does not change the sound when any sliders are moved, or if a preset is chosen.

I have a 2.1 speaker system plugged in to the rear audio-out socket.

I have updated the drivers for Synaptics HD Audio and Intel Display Audio to the most recent versions. Spatial Sound is turned off in the speaker properties box.

Anyone know what might be the cause?

Just discovered the equalizer works from the front headphone sockets (there are two).
I wonder why the rear audio-out bypasses the equalizer?

Same thing happens to me with my PRODESK 400 G6. Equalizer change sound only on the earphones plugged in the front input. It also works with the internal speaker of the PC (if i unplug the speakers from the rear audio out).
