In short: the internal speakers work in BIOS hardware diagnostics test, and with all the 'beeps'.
In Windows though, no audio device could be found. I have tried:
- Remove Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus driver from Device Manager
- Update Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus driver in Device Manager
- Update BIOS
- Set BIOS to factory default
- Perform a hard reset (power down, remove power and hold power button for 10 seconds)
- Update all drivers via HP Soft Paq
- Try Windows Problem Solver
- Try HP Diagnostics in Windows -> No audio device found
I'm kinda hopeless here. Before reinstalling (if that would even work) I'd like to hear whether you guys have any options left for me.
Biggest nightmare: my Windows version doesn't support the speakers? Well let's hope it's not that, but I'm afraid so.
Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi:
I've never heard of a synaptics audio system before.
It seems to me that the sp95678 driver exe file may be running, but it isn't installing the drivers.
The Audio device on HD bus should have a manufacturer's name.
Please post the hardware ID for the device, so I can dig into the driver files and see where that ID may be located.
Will try a manual install if possible, if I can figure out what to do.
Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device...

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply, and excuse me for my late response, been away for a couple of days.
As you asked, the hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_51D7&SUBSYS_103C8058&REV_1000
I've tried manually installing two different Conexant HD drivers, but to no avail:
The above screenshot still shows 'Unknown manufacturer' etc.
While the config panel only shows my USB Keyboard, my dock and my 2nd display's audio.
For the heck of it: I have tried disconnecting all other audio 'sources' by using another keyboard (with no audio port), disconnecting the 2nd display and disconnecting my dock, but to no avail.
Thanks for your help so far!

You're very welcome.
Very odd. The last time I checked there was a different audio driver listed there,
Now there is the Conexant one (sp94997).
When I use 7-zip to extract the sp94997.exe file into its driver folder, I do see driver support for the hardware ID you posted.
Here is a partial copy and paste of the driver setup information file which shows driver support for the hardware ID you posted.
[Conexant.NTamd64.6.4]
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.CNXTCodec.DeviceDesc% = HdAud2075x4.Merling, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5111&SUBSYS_103C2B65
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.CNXTCodec.DeviceDesc% = HdAud2095x4, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_51D7&SUBSYS_103C8057 ; Gallardo
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.CNXTCodec.DeviceDesc% = HdAud2095x4, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_51D7&SUBSYS_103C8058 ; Diablo
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.CNXTCodec.DeviceDesc% = HdAud2095x4, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_51D7&SUBSYS_103C805E ; Elan
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.CNXTCodec.DeviceDesc% = HdAud2095x4, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_51D7&SUBSYS_103C805C ; Gazelle
See if this works...download and save, but do not run this driver.
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp94501-95000/sp94997.exe
Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
After you install 7-Zip, right click on the sp94997 file you saved.
Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp94997).
Once that is done, go to the device manager. Click on the HD Audio device needing the driver.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Click on Have Disk, and browse to the driver folder that 7-Zip created>x64>chdrt (setup information file), click Next, and see if the driver installs that way.

I've followed the steps, but to no avail. The same information shows on the 'driver' tab, manufacturer uknown etc.
This is what device manager looks like, by the way.
And when trying to select an output device, the internal speakers don't show.

You're very welcome.
Sorry that I wasn't able to help you with this issue.
I hope you can get the sound to work again.
I read nothing but issues with that Conexant audio system both on desktops and notebooks.
HP should just stick with the Realtek audio.
