I have an HP Pavilion 27xw monitor. I know that it does not have speakers. When my laptop (ThinkPad) is plugged into the monitor, I don't hear any sound from the laptop. If the laptop is not plugged into the monitor, I hear the sound from the laptop just fine. How can I fix this to hear the sound from the laptop when the monitor is connected to the laptop?

I believe you use HDMI cable to connect. HDMI cable carries sound and your machine simply sends sound to the HDMI cable and it won't go to anywhere because your monitor does not have speakers.

Now. Please remove HDMI sound and use what ever available sound on your computer.

(a) Right click Speaker icon,

(b) Select Open Sound settings,

(c) Select the right sound from your output device (must be Realtek or similar).

Regards.
