It detects the speakers, but not the actual microphone, it is saying that it is not plugged in!

What manufacturer and model-number of headset are you using?

 

Are you connecting to the "microphone input" socket on the front of the computer, or the same socket on the back?  Or, does your headset connect via USB?

 

Within Microsoft "Settings", search for "sound", and select the app. Scroll to the "Audio Input" section, to see which input device is active.  There also is a "test" - talk into your microphone, and see if a horizontal bar moves at all.
