HP ENVY Desktop - 750-055xt CT
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
I have an Envy Desktop 750-055 xt. I want to add an SPDIF input so that I can transfer DAT audio recordings to the PC in digital format, rather than having to go out analog from the DAT player into the PC, and then have to re-digitize the recordings via software.

The PC didn't offer any choice of soundcards when I first configured and purchased it, so it only has the soundcard that came integrated with the motherboard.

What kind of hardware or accessory can I use to add SPDIF input? Do I need a different soundcard and is there room for one? Is there some kind of add-on board I can install - I already installed a firewire card using the PCI bus so I can input digital video from a DV camcorder. Is there something similar I can add for digital audio?

I've also seen inexpensive external accessories which provide an SPDIF input and connect to the PC via USB? Will these work for audio? I saw similar accessories for firewire connectors which wouldn't work for my needs because they only permit file transfer - not real-time ingestion of videtape playback. Would the same be true of these USB-connected SPDIF adaptors? Are they only used for optical file transfer, or could they also accommodate digital tape playback input?

If anyone can tell me what the options are, and pros and cons if there are several, I'd appreciate it

Hi! @CCasper, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you would like to add SPDIF audio input to your PC.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?

As you mentioned you would like to add SPDIF audio input to your PC.

To get SPDIF input your PC you would need to add a sound card to your PC.

You need a sound card like ASUS XONAR DG Headphone Amp & PCI 5.1 Audio Card.

Using this card the PC supports digital audio output for:

TV and music: two-channel stereo. (Your AV receiver may separate the audio signal into multiple channels.)

DVD playback: the multiple channel Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS Digital encoded audio signal passes to your AV receiver for decoding.

Refer this article to know more information about using Digital Out or SPDIF Audio.

Thanks for your reply but I do not think it answers my question. I do NOT need SPDIF OUTPUT. I need an SPDIF INPUT on my PC, so I can take the optical digital ouput from my DAT playback and send it in digital form directly into my PC for editing.

Also, I am talking not about a laptop but about an HP Envy 750-055xt Desktop PC which came with a sound card integrated on the motherboard.

Can you help me with this question?

@CCasper, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Since there is no SPDIF input on this desktop, you cannot use it  I would recommend you to purchase M-Audio Firewire Solo recording interface. It has RCA spdif in and out.

Also, refer this article from Realtek to know more information about using spdif input.

Note: Refer page 78 for more information.

Hope this answers your query!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂
