I keep getting a fail to initialize error message for Smart Audio, how do I fix or remove this, I can't find a Smart Audio application and I have run the audio diagnostic several times and it says that everything is functioning properly.  Any advice?

Hi @shanmukha0220

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—I'm really sorry you're seeing a “fail to initialize” error for Smart Audio, especially when your diagnostics show no faults. That kind of message can be frustrating, especially when the app itself seems invisible or unresponsive.

This error typically comes from the Conexant SmartAudio driver, which may have been preinstalled or bundled with your system’s audio package. If the application is missing or broken, it can trigger this error even though your sound works fine.

Here’s how to resolve or remove it:

Step-by-Step Fix for “Smart Audio Fail to Initialize” Error

1. Uninstall SmartAudio from Apps (if listed)

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  • Look for SmartAudio or Conexant SmartAudio
  • If found, click Uninstall

This removes the broken interface while keeping your audio driver intact.

2. Remove SmartAudio from Startup

If the app isn’t listed in Apps, it may still be launching at startup.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Go to the Startup tab
  • Look for SmartAudio or Conexant Audio Message Service
  • Right-click and choose Disable

This prevents the error from appearing each time you boot.

3. Reinstall the Audio Driver Without SmartAudio

  • Visit: HP Audio Driver Support
  • Enter your laptop’s product name or serial number
  • Download the Realtek or Conexant Audio Driver (avoid packages labeled “SmartAudio”)
  • Install the driver and restart your system

This restores audio functionality without the SmartAudio interface.

4. Optional: Use HP Audio Control Instead

If you want an audio control panel:

  • Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu
  • Go to My devices > Audio
  • If available, install HP Audio Control or use Realtek Audio Console

These offer equalizer and mic settings without SmartAudio dependencies.

Let me know what happens after removing SmartAudio from startup or reinstalling the driver—I’ll guide you further if needed.

You're doing everything right by checking diagnostics and staying proactive.
