Hi @cd88,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the microphone on your HP Laptop 15 is not working, there are several steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue. Here's a troubleshooting guide to help you.
Check the physical microphone:
- Ensure that the microphone is not physically damaged or blocked. Dust or debris can sometimes obstruct the microphone opening.
Enable the microphone:
- In Windows, right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings."
- Scroll down to the "Input" section and make sure your microphone is selected as the default recording device.
- You can also adjust the microphone volume by clicking on "Device properties" under the microphone.
Update audio drivers:
- Outdated or corrupt audio drivers can cause microphone problems. Visit the HP support website and download the latest audio drivers for your laptop model. Install them and restart your laptop.
Check privacy settings:
- In Windows, go to "Settings" > "Privacy" > "Microphone."
- Ensure that the microphone is allowed access to apps and that individual apps are not blocked from using the microphone.
Test the microphone:
- Open a voice recording app (e.g., Voice Recorder) or use an online microphone test to check if your microphone is working. Try speaking into the microphone and see if it registers any sound.
Disable enhancements:
- Sometimes, audio enhancements can interfere with the microphone. In the "Sound" settings, under the "Recording" tab, right-click the microphone and select "Properties." Go to the "Enhancements" tab and check "Disable all enhancements." Click "Apply" and test your microphone again.
Check for software conflicts:
- Third-party applications or software might be conflicting with your microphone. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed apps or drivers to see if that resolves the issue.
Check for hardware issues:
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there's a hardware problem with the microphone or the audio jack.
External microphone:
- As a temporary workaround, you can also use an external microphone (e.g., USB microphone or headset with a built-in microphone) to see if it works.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the microphone issue on your HP Laptop 15.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
