Hello,

I have an HP EliteBook 840 and my sound is not working. I get a SmartAudio error saying no Conexant device is found. Also, the audio driver is missing from Device Manager.

I tried restarting and scanning for hardware changes, but nothing worked.

Can you please send me the correct audio driver or guide me on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi @Thomas-fadi

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the audio issue on your HP EliteBook 840 G3. Based on the screenshot, the SmartAudio application cannot detect the Conexant audio hardware, and you also mentioned that the audio device driver is missing from Device Manager. Thank you for already trying a restart and hardware scan.

Please try the following steps in order:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and any external devices.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and start the PC.
  • Check if audio returns.

Check for Hidden Audio Devices

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Click View > Show hidden devices.
  • Expand:
    • Sound, video and game controllers
    • System devices
  • If you see any Conexant or audio-related devices with warning icons, right-click and uninstall them.
  • Restart the notebook.

Install the Correct HP Audio Driver

  • Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page:
  • Enter: HP EliteBook 840 G3
  • Select your Windows version.
  • Download and install the latest Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver available for your system.
  • Restart the notebook after installation.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Power it on and repeatedly tap F2.
  • Run:
    • Audio Test
    • Component Tests > Sound
  • Note any failure IDs if displayed.

Update the BIOS

  • Visit the HP support page for the EliteBook 840 G3.
  • Check whether a newer BIOS version is available.
  • Install the BIOS update while connected to AC power.
  • Restart the system and check audio functionality again.

Verify Windows Audio Services

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Confirm that these services are running:
    • Windows Audio
    • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
  • If stopped, start them and set Startup Type to Automatic.

Check if the Audio Device Is Detected in BIOS

  • Restart the notebook and press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Load BIOS defaults.
  • Save changes and restart.
  • If the audio device is still not detected by Windows after reinstalling the HP driver, it may indicate a hardware communication issue between the system board and the audio codec.

Since the audio driver is completely missing from Device Manager and SmartAudio reports that no Conexant device is found, the most important steps are reinstalling the HP Conexant audio driver, updating the BIOS, and running the HP audio hardware diagnostics.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
