HP Pavilion desktop Windows 10 - I've never used a microphone either internal or external. I want to use Voice Recorder, and it appears to be recording via internal microphone. But when I try to play what I recorded, I get no sound. Input is Stereo Mix Realtek High Definition Audio. Output is Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio. Speakers work with all other sounds, just not with Voice recorder. Speakers are connected by being plugged in to the back of the computer. What do I have wrong? Please help.

Hi @MO_newbie
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where Voice Recorder on your HP Pavilion desktop isn't playing back sound, even though it appears to be recording via the internal microphone and the speakers are working for other audio. This issue could be related to incorrect audio settings, driver conflicts, or misconfigured audio input/output settings in Windows 10. Let’s go through a step-by-step troubleshooting process to help you resolve this.
1. Check the Audio Playback Settings
It seems like the issue could be with the output device not being set correctly for Voice Recorder playback. Here's how you can check the playback settings:
Verify the Playback Device
- Right-click the Sound Icon in the taskbar (bottom-right corner).
- Select Open Sound settings or Playback Devices (depending on your version of Windows).
- Under Output, ensure that Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) is selected as the default playback device.
- If it's not already selected, click on Speakers, then Set Default.
- Click OK to save the settings.
After making sure your speakers are the default output device, try playing back your Voice Recorder recording again to see if you hear anything.
2. Check the Voice Recorder Settings and Audio Levels
Sometimes, Voice Recorder might be set to use a different input/output, or the audio levels might be too low.
Check Microphone Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, make sure that the correct microphone is selected (e.g., Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio) or any other external microphone you may have connected).
- Under Advanced Sound Options, make sure Voice Recorder is set to the correct output device (Speakers or Realtek).
Check the Recording Levels:
- Right-click the Sound Icon in the taskbar again and select Sounds.
- Go to the Recording tab.
- Right-click on your microphone device (e.g., Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)) and select Properties.
- Go to the Levels tab and make sure the microphone level is turned up (usually around 80-100).
- If you have any Stereo Mix options enabled, make sure the volume is turned up as well.
3. Test with a Different Audio Source
Try recording with Voice Recorder and play it back in a different audio application to see if the issue is specific to Voice Recorder:
- Open the Voice Recorder app, record something, and then instead of playing it back in the Voice Recorder app, try opening it in a different media player (e.g., Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player).
- This will help confirm if the issue is with Voice Recorder itself or your system’s audio playback.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
