Hi, my HP 243 monitor has the mute LED permanently lit so I can get no sound output. I have done a factory reset on the monitor which has no effect. If I unplug the USB cable from my PC the mute LED is turned off and this state sound is heard. When I re-plug the USB the mute LED is again lit and no sound is output.

You should have an audio cable connected from the PC to the audio input of the monitor.
Unless I am mistaken, the 243m does not support audio in the HDMI line.
Make sure that the audio source is the Realtek or chipset in the motherboard and not audio that comes from the graphics card.
Normally the green colored connector on the PC is the audio out.
post back if problem continues.

Hi, thanks for your input however I am sure that the HP 243M does have an audio line in the HDMI since if I disconnect the USB input from the PC and unmute the speaker on the display then the audio does work. With the USB disconnected the camera and microphone are of course disconnected so this is an unsuitable solution. As soon as the USB cable is re-connected the mute LED on the monitor is lit and the audio is cut off.

Check the firmware version of your monitor. There was a firmware and a display release
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitedisplay-e243m-23.8-inch-monitor/18164494
file is in windows 10 64 only
firmware is 8024 A dated Jun 10, 2021
: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp114001-114500/sp114152.exe
note that there are other tools needed to install the firmware. You need to select win10 x 64
