Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000 (599K0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I hardly ever use the Array microphone, but today, rather than using my Logitech headset, I wanted to try using my Apple Airpods. Only issue is that the Airpods do not have good audio quality as long as the microphone in them is enabled. Once disabled, the audio quality is perfect. The only other option, however, is to use the array microphone. But when I set up my audio panel to do that, I couldn't get it to display anything else than a solid green volume bar, like there's constant static or something. I've tried multiple solutions to see if I could hear what, if anything was transmitting, and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I have all the latest updates, I have NOT uninstalled any drivers yet because there are multiple Realtek devices to uninstall and I'm not sure which one in Device Manager I need to uninstall.

I'm worried that the jack for the microphone needs to be unplugged and plugged back in, but this is an HP Victus 15 which is totally sealed up, and also, that is way too invasive of a task just to get the mic working again. Restarting doesn't help. Not sure what else to do. I guess till then, I'll have to use the awful Logitech headset again.

If anyone could provide some insight, I would deeply appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi @cessna_xls,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you.

I reviewed the post. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.  😊

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Are you facing this issue while using any other headset or only while using the AirPods?
  • Did you check your AirPods on any other computer to further isolate the issue?

I have a few steps to help you out:

The Troubleshooting tool automatically finds and fixes many computer issues. Use it to troubleshoot microphone problems.

In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

Click Troubleshooting.

Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.

The Sound troubleshooter opens. Click Next. The troubleshooter begins checking the audio service status.

Select the device you want to troubleshoot, and then click Next.

Follow the on-screen instructions and make any changes suggested by the troubleshooter. When done, close the troubleshooter.

If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

We may need to reset the privacy settings for the Microphone if the issue occurred after any recent windows updates:

  1. Open Settings from your start menu.
  2. Click on Privacy in order to access all your privacy settings.
  3. Select Microphone from the left pane and then click the Change button.
  4. Now, turn on the microphone for this device.
  5. Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
  6. Finally, in the app list, make sure to turn on microphone access for every app you want to give permission to access your microphone.
  7. Repeat the same exact steps but for your webcam this time.

If the issue persists, uninstall the microphone driver and restart to automatically install a fresh driver for the same.

  1. Open device manager, the fastest way is through the search bar:
  2. Open ‘Audio Inputs and Outputs’
  3. Left-click on your recording device.
  4. In the menu that opens up Click ‘Uninstall’.
  5. delete the driver. click apply/OK and then, restart the pc.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

If this solution hit the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Regards,
