Hi @SalemWitc15,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your Realtek audio driver installs successfully but does not take effect afterward. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Restart the computer after installation
Even if not prompted, restart the system once the driver finishes installing.
Some audio services do not reload until a full reboot.

Confirm the Realtek device is selected as default
Right-click the speaker icon and open Sound settings.
Make sure Realtek Audio is set as the default output and input device.

Check Device Manager status
Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
Confirm Realtek Audio is listed without warning icons or errors.

Disable and re-enable the audio device
In Device Manager, right-click the Realtek audio device and choose Disable.
Wait a few seconds, then enable it again to refresh the driver state.

Remove conflicting audio drivers
In Device Manager, uninstall other audio devices such as generic “High Definition Audio Device.”
Restart the computer so only the Realtek driver loads.

Check Windows Audio services
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
Make sure Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder are running and set to Automatic.

Install the driver from the system manufacturer
Download the Realtek audio driver specifically for your laptop or motherboard model.
Generic Realtek drivers may install but not fully activate on some systems.

Turn off Windows automatic driver replacement
Windows Update can overwrite the Realtek driver with a generic one.
After installing Realtek, check if Windows Update immediately replaces it.

Test with headphones or external speakers
Plug in headphones to confirm whether audio output switches correctly.
This helps rule out a hardware port or jack detection issue.

If the Realtek driver appears installed but audio still uses a generic driver or produces no sound, the issue is usually a driver conflict or Windows reverting to a default audio driver rather than a failed installation.

I hope this helps.
