I was gifted and HP pavilion 260-a020 but the sound card doesn't seem to be working. There is no error, it just doesn't work. What would be an acceptable replacement sound card for this computer?

Hi @Callie214,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP Slimline 260-a020 likely uses an integrated sound card on the motherboard, which might be the reason you're not hearing sound if it's not working. Before opting for an external sound card, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot.

Check Device Manager: Ensure that the sound driver is correctly installed and there are no issues listed under "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager.

Update Drivers: Go to the HP website or use Windows Update to make sure you have the latest audio drivers installed.

Audio Settings: Verify that the audio output device is correctly set, especially if using external speakers or headphones.

Check for Mute or Low Volume: Sometimes, the issue could be as simple as muted audio or low volume settings.

If the integrated sound card is still not working and you want a replacement, an external USB sound card would be an easy solution. Some good options that are compatible with most computers are:

  • Creative Sound Blaster Play! 3 USB Sound Card
  • Sabrent USB External Stereo Sound Adapter
  • Plugable USB Audio Adapter

These options connect via USB and are typically plug-and-play, which makes them very easy to use. If you prefer an internal solution, you would need to verify if there is room and compatibility for an internal PCIe sound card. Some options are:

  • ASUS Xonar SE (PCIe)
  • Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX (PCIe)

These provide better audio quality and additional features but would require installing inside the computer. Be sure to check if your PC has a free PCIe slot if you opt for an internal sound card.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you so much for the very informational reply. I appreciate it more than you know. I'm still waiting for the replacement power cord to show up and as soon as it arrives I will boot the computer and follow your instructions to see if any of that works. The solutions you have provided are very easy to understand. I believe an external sound card with a USB might be the way to go. Thank you for mentioning the exact ones you recommend.
