HI. Can someone please help me out here. I used to run cakewalk sonar DAW and once I got set up I had no problems. Now (some years later) I have installed band lab by cakewalk or visavis...I also have just recently tried other DAW software and for some reason none of them will recognize my mic/ I have tried all options. I.e., Elesis io2 interface, Mackie mixer through SB card and direct to pc. I can hear the mic and I can record through sound recorder app. But nothing else recognizes the mic at all. The latest daw I tried was Audacity and that doesn't even respond when I press the record button although it does suggest I download the latest drivers or whatever for my PC. I cant do that because the web site doesn't even recognize my serial or product code.Any ideas apart from throwing myself or this PC off a bridge.

Hello @dooferit
In this case, I would advise you to buy a new device. For example, go to a computer store and test notebooks and get advice, but do not buy the most expensive! A good used one for a good price will do, too.
Good luck
best regards

Hello @dooferit
To help you I need to know the product number (p/n) of your notebook !
You will find this information on the back of your notebook printed in small alphanumeric letters.
( Please note: It's not allowed to post serial numbers (s/n) in public ! )
best regards

Hello @dooferit
(1) Before we start, create a windows restore point ! Very important !
https://www.howtogeek.com/797227/how-to-create-a-system-restore-point-on-windows-10-or-windows-11/
(2) Update BIOS
HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B52) | A0.14 Rev.A | 6.0 MB | Mar 7, 2017 | Download |
Why ?
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4123786-2338478-16
Quote: "
Updating the BIOS is recommended as standard maintenance of the computer. It can also help resolve the following issues:
- An available BIOS update resolves a specific issue or improves computer performance.
- The current BIOS does not support a hardware component or a Windows upgrade.
- HP Support recommends installing a specific BIOS update.
"
(3) Open windows device manager. Right click on the audio device to uninstall it and confirm.
( Do NOT REBOOT ! )
(4) Install audio driver
Realtek HD Audio Driver | 6.0.1.7571 Rev.A | 156.5 MB | Aug 13, 2015 | Download |
(5) Reboot and test again ...

Thanks for your time ub6424. I followed your instructions to the letter and nothing has changed. Just last week I did a system restore or reset factory settings thing and that did nothing either. I just want to go back on something I said about being able to hear the mic. I cant. I mean I can but only when using Elesis io2 but that is direct monitoring. So leaving that out of the equation, sound goes in and sound comes out but not simultaneously. We listen to you tube all the time, The pc beeps and prompts me when I plug something into input or output. Now get this strange one. I plugged in my mini disc and opened voice recorder. I cant hear anything but I know it is recording because the rings are pulsating. after recording it plays back. So, just like the typical man I am it cant multi task. There's something missing in the middle. yeh between the ears Ha. Anyway, in device manager I opened everything and went down the list double clicking and all but a few are working correctly. This is (Thankfully a short) list of the things that don't have drivers. AMD SMBUS. Direct memory access controller. High precision event timer. Numeric data processor. Programable interrupt controller. System speaker. System timer. None of those things mean anything to me. I am totally lost. Thanks once again for your time.
