Example: Pavilion 6530Slim SO1-aF002
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

At the top rear of my tower are 2 round sockets, one green/yellow, one blue.  I assume they are to do with speaker and microphone, but no obvious marking as to which is which.  Do they work, as there is also a combined front socket for speaker/mic?  -Which is no use to me as I have separate items with separate plugs, neither of which colour match the sockets.

@spedding -- typically, the colouring of those "audio" sockets are:

  • green -- speaker output
  • blue -- "line" input (such as an old cassette-deck player)
  • pink -- microphone input

I have never encountered a "yellow" socket.

Some computers have just one "combination" socket for "blue-or-pink" input.

Thanks for that.  No yellow socket, but it's not definite green either, sort of half way between.

Biggest bother is that separate mic doesn't function in the combo front socket, and there is no pink one at all.  So no mic. use..

hi

"Example: Pavilion 6530Slim SO1-aF002 "

which model do you have after all?
the microphone jack, can be "special" ..
what type of microphone are you using, exactly how is the plug
see for example this

Model & product No.    S01-aF0020a,  4F992ZWA#ABU.

Thank you. The link got me the info I needed, unfortunately it was not the info. I wanted to discover.  Seems my mic is not compatible with HP computers.  Frustrating to dump a perfectly good unit because HP does not provide a standard mic socket.

Hi

I have a problem with your reference
I just find these  models

Product Number
4F992EA

HP Slim Desktop - S01-aF0020

Product Number
9EE58AA

but that does not change much, we can read here:

1 headphone/microphone combo

that's what you deduced, right?

But

Back I/O ports

  • (2) Audio (input/output) ports

I have never tested, but in line input at the back, I have a doubt, maybe that would work
Otherwise, no other choice, you need a compatible headset.

@spedding -- there is also a combined front socket for speaker/mic?

You could install an add-in sound-card, with the standard blue/green/pink connectors, and "disable" the motherboard's built-in audio support.

Is this your computer: HP Slim Desktop - S01-aF0020 Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support

It lists one combination microphone/headphone port -- "input" from the microphone, or "output" to the headphone.

From: HP Slim Desktop (S01-aF0020) - Review 2021 - PCMag Asia

Audio connections include a headphone/microphone combo jack on the front, and separate 3.5mm input and output ports on the back.

The picture of the back-plane does show one "blue" socket, and one "yellowish-green" socket -- think of one of those "high-visibility" vests that roadside flaggers wear (not the "bright-orange" coloured one).

it all depends on the audio port, I am not talking about the speaker port here
if there is a line input !!

but I indicated correctly, I doubt that it works, I can not do this test

it would certainly be easier to use a compatible headset than to try an audio card, the usb card options are not the best, the internal can be complicated installation, compatibility, we have saw lots of failure here
The webcam can also help out, but the micro quality is not always great
must see the intended use ...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've also been looking in other places.  Seems the simplest ( and cheapest) option would be to use a  3.5mm jack to usb A converter.  Unless any one knows that HP wouldn't recognise that.

No idea
I did not think that it could exist
So if it works I'll wait for your news
