Microsoft Windows 11

The latest Windows 11 update made my HP sound driver stop working. Microsoft says the driver is too outdated for Windows 11. Problem is there is no update available for HP's audio driver. Now my desktop speaker system is useless. How can HP just stop providing sound drivers that work with the latest version of Windows? Does anyone know of a solution for this?

I already tried a USB adapter, but that doesn't work.

Hi @Mikey7950050,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating when updates break functionality like audio drivers! If Windows 11 is saying the driver is outdated, it's likely due to the update being incompatible with your current driver. While HP may not have a new driver specifically for your system, here are a few possible solutions to try.

Roll Back the Driver

If Windows 11 automatically updated the audio driver and it's causing issues, you can roll it back to a previous version (if available).

  • Open Device Manager (Press Win + X, then select Device Manager).
  • Find Sound, video and game controllers, then right-click your audio device (probably listed as "Realtek" or similar).
  • Select Properties, go to the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver (if the option is available).

Manually Install an Older Driver

Sometimes Windows doesn't offer the best drivers automatically. You can download an older or compatible driver from HP’s support website for your desktop model.

  • Go to HP's official support page and search for your desktop model.
  • Download the latest audio driver they offer (even if it's for an older version of Windows).
  • After downloading, install the driver manually by selecting Update Driver from Device Manager and choosing Browse my computer for drivers.

Use Generic Windows Driver

Windows might have a generic audio driver that can work with your speakers:

  • In Device Manager, right-click your audio device under Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Select Update Driver, then choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • If it doesn't find a better driver, try choosing Browse my computer for drivers and then select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • Pick High Definition Audio Device (this is a generic driver) and see if it works.

Try Reinstalling the Audio Driver

Sometimes a fresh install can help:

  • In Device Manager, right-click the audio device, and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer and let Windows attempt to reinstall the audio driver automatically.

Check for Additional Windows Updates

Sometimes Microsoft releases updates to resolve issues caused by prior updates, including audio driver fixes.

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check if there are any new updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I appreciate the reply, but those solutions do not work. The problem is the sound driver (Conexant HD Audio) is too old (2021), not that it's new. It was working until the latest Windows 11 update, but Microsoft says it is no longer supported. I tried searching for a newer version of this Driver, even on HP's site, but there isn't one. The auto-search keeps putting this same driver back in. I just tried changing to the generic driver, as you suggested, but that didn't work either. In fact, there was no sound and I kept getting an error that the Conexant device was not found. So, I uninstalled the generic driver, let the system put the Conexant driver back in (automatically), and still no sound. What makes me angry is that HP doesn't have an up-to-date sound driver that works with Windows 11. Why is HP abandoning their customers? I feel like HP doesn't care that our speakers will no longer work with Windows 11. For now, I'm stuck with crappy monitor sound, and I will likely have to buy a new speaker system, all because HP can't be bothered to keep their sound drivers compatible with Windows, which is the OS everyone uses on HPs!
